Girls Lose Close Match at Brentsville

Game Date
Apr 1, 2016
Score
FALCONS: 1
BRENTSVILLE: 2

The girls showed tremendous resolve and determination, but ultimately lost 2-1 when Brentsville scored two late second half goals.  With 6 players unavailable for the game, the Falcons faced a difficult challenge with only 14 players available to face a strong, fast, and attack oriented Tigers squad.  That number was down to 13 less than 10 minutes into the first half, and down to 12 by the last 5 minutes of the first half.  Despite a thin roster, the girls managed to score the first goal with one minute remaining in the first half.  Megan Dietrich passed the ball out to Madeleine Hayes on the left side, and Madeleine was fouled just outside the 18 yard box. Megan took the free kick, which ricocheted of the cross bar and fell into the path of onrushing Sedona Bisek, who cleanly struck the ball into the back of the net.

With only one substitute available for the second half, the Falcons were under constant pressure from the Tigers who were pressing to equalize.  The girls played strong, resolute defense and were aided by some terrific saves from goalkeeper Kaylee Lamper.  The game remained 1-0 until 11:53 left to play in the second half.  The Tigers finally broke through on a corner kick that was driven low and hard and a Tigers player managed to squeeze the ball just past Kaylee at the near post.  The game winning goal came in the final minute on another corner kick that was initially defended but the ball was won by a Brentsville player who buried the shot from about 12 yards out.

The first half back four of Kristina Davis, Olivia Chirasello, Kailey Vance and Rebekah Sullivan played superbly defensively.  With Rebekah injured late in the first half, Erin Jones moved into the back line and that unit had a terrific second half as well.  In the end the pressure from Brentsville was too much, but the girls were very competitive under difficult circumstances.
